If honesty is truly best for a happy life, then why do we avoid the truth?

At one time or another, we have all found ourselves in a situation that results in us telling a lie or two in order to avoid complications.

Besides avoiding the consequences of our actions, there appears to be many reasons to avoid total honesty; such as trying to spare someone’s feelings, not wanting others to think badly of us, or thinking that we are protecting someone or protecting ourselves in order to avoid embarrassment or shame.

We might feel that these are perfectly legitimate reasons to bend the truth. Does the end always justify the means? In other words, is it ok to stretch the truth or flat out lie as long as it gets you the results you want?
