Right now there is a person in your life you need to say something to. But you haven’t been able to and so the issue continues. You’re not confident in your ability to get the point across in a positive way. Maybe you’re afraid this person will react in a bad way or have their feelings hurt. So, the cycle continues. The issue doesn’t go away and your stress continues to build.
It’s all about communication. A good goal for the New Year can be to improve your communication skills; to be better and more confident in your ability to get your point across effectively; to do a better job of connecting with the people in your life.
There are reasons we lack confidence in our ability to communicate. It is a process fraught with errors that can cause tremendous confusion, wasted effort and missed opportunities. It can be catastrophic in relationships. We often misunderstand others. They often misunderstand us. There are times when we mean well, but because of the way in which we say it, our message is misinterpreted. The results are unintended and consequences can be undesirable.
Time and again, we fail to be heard, and we fail to listen. We yell when we have promised not to, or we find ourselves shutting down when we said we wouldn’t. We become paralyzed with anger, sadness, fear, guilt, anxiety, confusion and other emotions, all because we can’t express ourselves properly. So, our discussions become fights. Our disagreements become insults and what was a small irritation has now turned into intense emotional battles.
No wonder we are afraid to speak up!
