Self-talk.

Everybody uses self-talk. Self-talk can be positive and sometimes it can be very negative.

Do you say things to yourself that you wouldn’t dare say to others? Do you say things to yourself such as: “you idiot” or “you’re not getting any better at this” or “how could you be so stupid?”

I would never say these things to a friend or even a stranger, so why is it all right for me to make such comments to myself? It’s simply not okay.

Excessive self-criticism tends to backfire, because it leads us to focus on our so-called failures instead of the small ways that we could have improved. Learn to relax your standards just a little.

Start by giving yourself the same empathy you’d show a friend.
