Things you can control.

When was the last time you felt completely certain, charged, confident, proud, self-assured, and capable of anything?

In order to feel more powerful and in control of your life, it is important to explore those areas where you feel insecure or less powerful.

Perhaps you feel underappreciated at work or trapped in a job you hate because you don’t think you have the knowledge or skills to advance. Maybe you feel invisible or unimportant in your relationship with your spouse, but for whatever reason you tolerate it. Perhaps you feel misunderstood or used by a friend or humiliated by a family member who self-destructs. Maybe you deal with health related issues that leave you feeling vulnerable and scared.

Whatever your issue, feeling powerless can leave you completely at the mercy of your situation. It’s not unlikely that people tend to either want to:

1) shut down and ignore it,
2) give up or
3) blame someone or some thing for their situation.

However, relieving yourself of any responsibility and being unwilling to examine what you can and cannot control, only leaves you feeling more powerless over the situation. Many people focus on things they have no control over. Ask yourself if this thing you feel overwhelmed about is something you have control over or not. Focus your energy and attention on what you can control. Therapy can assist you in this process.

What small step can you take today to help you feel more empowered?
