The main benefit of crying is catharsis. Catharsis is a purging or cleansing of your feelings through emotional release. When you cry, you can let go of pent up tension, sadness and other emotions that have been causing you pain. When too much pressure builds up inside of you, crying can serve as a release valve to help you blow off steam.
But what does it mean if the tears don’t stop falling?
Excessive crying, or the inability to control your emotions, often points to more serious underlying emotional issues. You are likely experiencing excessive stress, anxiety or depression in your life.
Therapy teaches you new ways to react emotionally to these stressors and to change the way your mind responds to them.
