In French, you don’t really say “I miss you”. You say “tu me manques,” which is closer to “you are missing from me”. You are a part of me.
Who are you missing?

Dear Carrie,
When I first moved to the US from France, 20 + years ago, I truly struggled with the fact that this ‘reflective’ concept was lost in translation. I once tried to tell a new friend that I had missed her when I went back to France during the holiday. Instead I ended up saying: “You missed me!” The underlying overconfidence of this affirmative statement was never intended. She understood, and we are still very good friends to this day–and I do miss her at times and I know she does miss me. Love your psych-wisdom memes anf you impeccable branding. Have a good rest of the week, Michel.
