At its simplest, self-esteem is the extent to which we respect and value ourselves. If you are super-critical or unkind to yourself, your self-esteem is likely to be low. This causes a host of problems; from a lack of confidence, to depression, anxiety, underachievement, addiction, problems with anger, relationships, and self-destructive behaviors.
These problems then encourage a neglectful and uncaring attitude towards the self. In turn, this contributes to low mood and low self-worth. It is a vicious cycle.
Therapy involves breaking this pattern. Change means taking a hard look at yourself and feeling strong enough to change the things that you don’t like about yourself. A supportive therapist helps you on this journey.
Therapy sessions frequently address how to help people gain a stronger sense of self. People with low self-esteem often work with therapists on becoming more assertive, confident, and self-aware.
Also, being able to identify and use coping skills is an important tool for modifying stress levels and dealing with difficult feelings. Therapy helps you identify the things that calm you down and soothe you, and teaches you how to take a more caring attitude towards yourself.
